Satori ran as fast as she could through the stone passageway. It was dark and she had to feel along the lichen covered wall to tell where she was going. The air was stale and smelled of mildew. She knew she had to get out of the village, and away to a safe hiding place. Somewhere where no one would follow if she got spotted.
"The Black Forest. That's where I shall find refuge," the thought made her stomach uneasy.
The black forest was avoided by everyone in the village and the outside lands. Any poor unlucky soul who ventured in never returned. It was a dark place, where all the tree trunks were black as coal. Rumor told that the forest was haunted. Only the gods knew what kind of frightening creatures lurked within the dense vegetation.
"if I am to venture into that dreadful place then I must get back to my home for previsions, but what if the bad men see me?."
That is a chance she just had to take, she would not be able to journey far without food or water.
She finally reached the end of the passage. There was a trapdoor that led to the outside. While carefully cradling the fragile box, Satori lifted the hidden door.
The air smelled of smoke. All around she could hear chaos.  She climbed out and looked around.
Most of the houses were a blaze, smoke filled the streets, terrorized cries from villagers and animals trapped inside the barns rang in her ears. She wanted to help everyone but that would mean being disobedient to her grandfather and she did not want to get into trouble.
Satori crouched down and carefully peeked around the corner. The coast was clear, and her home was not far. She could run there and get out of sight quickly before anyone saw her. She was after all the fastest child in the village! She made a break for it, running in between the houses for extra caution.
She finally made it to her hut. The roof was in flames. She didn't have much time to get what she needed before it collapsed. Without hesitation she darted inside and closed the door. She stood there for a moment with her back against the door, trying to gather her thoughts.
Deep breath. She grabbed her coat, which was hung by the door, and then she went to the small kitchen. Hanging on the back of a chair was her grandfather's rucksack. She opened it up and looked around. She saw two loaves of bread and a wheel of cheese. Satori gathered them and put them inside.  There was already a wineskin filled with water and a dagger. Both of which belonged to Uriah.
Looking at the objects made her think of him.
"I wonder if he is okay." She thought.
The wood in the ceiling made a loud cracking noise.
"Whoa! I got to get out of here" she said as she was snapped out of her daze.  She wrapped the box up with the coat, put it in the sac and bolted for the door. She had just made it through before she heard the hut's roof come crashing down.
"Yikes! That was a close one!"
"Now that I got want I need I can get out of here"
She slipped the rucksack on her back, crouched down and peeped around the corner of the house.
Through the smoke she saw a few of the bad men laughing and jeering and an injured villager. She felt bad and wanted to help but what could an 8 year old do? With a heavy heart she reluctantly took advantage of the distraction and quickly made her escape.
Satori ran through the fields of tall grass towards the mountain path. When she finally made it to the trail she turned and looked down on her home.  It was engulfed in flames and smoke rose up into the starry night above.  A great sadness filled her heart and she felt very alone. She remembered what her grandfather told her and she turned and fled up the mountain path.

A lone pair of vigilant eyes studied Satori from its hiding place. It watched her disappear into the hidden mountain trail. And then the owner of the feral eyes stealthily followed the little girl.

O.O this is amazing Holly! I almost cried in the end of the last part. You are very good at writing. I love your use of words. And little cliff hanger at the end there. Always good. I can't wait to hear more.

Where did you get the names Uriah and Satori to? They are very nice.

I am writing two stories >.< one of them got erased from my computer though :(. So much work put into it but not even named and now all gone.
I put the other on deviantart after that :P. 'The Journals of the unknown truths'.
